
The OMEGA biofuels project held an "Industry Day" at their research facility in SF to provide a tour to groups from industry, academia, other government agencies and international interests. Approximately 95 people from the US and 5 countries attended the tour. The tour featured the floating 1,600-liter photobioreactor system that ARC developed to grow algae to produce biofuel oil. Dr. Jonathan Trent (Bioengineering Branch, Code SCB) presented a brief overview about the project accomplishments and potential of the OMEGA technology as a method for growing microalgae on wastewater. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a scalable system for producing biofuels in a way that does not compete with agriculture for water, fertilizer, or land. This technology will be transferred to the public sector. Also, Dr. Sigrid Reinsch (Space Biosciences Research Branch, Code SCR) presented a poster about her microbe identification research from the wastewater. Links to local TV coverage:
