OMEGA Industry Day

The OMEGA biofuels project held an "Industry Day" at their research facility in SF to provide a tour to groups from industry, academia, other government agencies and international interests. Approximately 95 people from the US and 5 countries attended the tour. The tour featured the floating 1,600-liter photobioreactor system that ARC developed to grow algae to produce biofuel oil.

ESA Turns Over Ground European Modular Cultivation System to NASA Ames

Beginning in 2003 the Flight Systems Implementation Branch (Code SCF) has performed on ISS three successful plant biology experiments(TROPI-1,2006;TROPI-2,2010; Plant Signaling, 2011) inside the European Space Agency’s (ESA) European Modular Cultivation System (EMCS).

BBC News interviewed Dr. Sharmila Bhattacharya regarding her work with flies and the effects of spaceflight on the immune system. BBC recently published an in-depth article on 3/23/2012 describing the importance of flies in translational research.

NASA scientist - the inventor, heart, and soul of the OMEGA system (Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae) - Dr. Jonathan Trent received his PhD in biological oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Bion-M1

NASA's participation in the Bion-M1 mission will continue the 30+-year history of collaborative research between NASA and the Russian Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP), Moscow.

Ultrasound 2 (STS-135)

The Ultrasound 2 (USND 2) system is the next generation device which has replaced the existing Ultrasound system onboard the ISS. The new system is being used on the ISS in support of the Human Research Program’s (HRP) International Space Station Medical Project (ISSMP) and medical operations.
